float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-R8ARFtv6g0s\/T-euY6M9DzI\/AAAAAAAAAGs\/SViTJJc5mx0\/s1600\/Roytberg+-+pB+-+Image2+-+Sometimes+It+Takes+a+Divorce+-+June+24+2012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor: move;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-R8ARFtv6g0s\/T-euY6M9DzI\/AAAAAAAAAGs\/SViTJJc5mx0\/s200\/Roytberg+-+pB+-+Image2+-+Sometimes+It+Takes+a+Divorce+-+June+24+2012.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In one situation, a client came in very distraught. \u00a0Jane was in a long-term marriage and had 2 lovely children. \u00a0For years, her husband Bill, was a wonderful soul mate and then, suddenly, he made a 180 degree turn. \u00a0He took great risks with family money and engaged in affairs with other women. \u00a0His continuous \u201chighs\u201d and \u201clows\u201d led Jane to seek help and conclude that he was suffering from a bi-polar disorder. \u00a0Unfortunately, he refused to seek help. \u00a0 He was not seeing a doctor. \u00a0He was not taking medication. \u00a0He thought there was nothing wrong with him and everything wrong with her.<\/p>\n<p>She did not want to break up the family, nor did she want to leave him, but one cannot knock on a locked door forever. \u00a0Finally, Jane decided that she needed to file for divorce to preserve the emotional and financial well-being of her family.<\/p>\n<p>Mediation was out of the question as was collaborative law because Bill simply would not voluntarily participate in any process. \u00a0He continued to jeopardize the family\u2019s finances, so we had to file an action for divorce in a very aggressive way. \u00a0In fact, we filed an emergency Order to Show Cause to restrain him from further dissipating family resources. \u00a0After it was signed by a judge, the Order had to be served on Bill personally, but Bill began evading the process server. \u00a0He wouldn\u2019t answer the door. \u00a0He wouldn\u2019t pick up the phone. \u00a0Finally, the process server caught up with him as he was running down the street with one of his girlfriends, and that is where and how he was finally served.<\/p>\n<p>Bill then hired a fairly aggressive attorney to defend him and we moved forward. \u00a0It took months of litigation and financial discovery in court for Bill to finally understand what was happening to his and his family\u2019s life and to realize that he was suffering from an illness. \u00a0He sought help, and Jane accompanied him on his visits to doctors. \u00a0After Bill\u2019s condition was stabilized, Jane and Bill decided that they didn\u2019t really want to get divorced, however, Jane still wanted security to make sure that if Bill lost control again, her future and that of their children would not be jeopardized.<\/p>\n<p>Bill\u2019s \u201caggressive\u201d lawyer and I were completely on board in helping these people save their marriage. \u00a0It was finally decided that Bill and Jane would enter into a Separation Agreement that divided all of their finances and their responsibilities with respect to the children. \u00a0After it was signed by each of them, they would dismiss the divorce action and continue to live together.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-5ojBVGqjAEo\/T-euWpEFDZI\/AAAAAAAAAGk\/0RCA1I_cqB0\/s1600\/Roytberg+-+pB+-+Image+-+Sometimes+It+Takes+a+Divorce+-+June+24+2012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-5ojBVGqjAEo\/T-euWpEFDZI\/AAAAAAAAAGk\/0RCA1I_cqB0\/s200\/Roytberg+-+pB+-+Image+-+Sometimes+It+Takes+a+Divorce+-+June+24+2012.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Through therapy, marriage counseling and psychiatric management of \u00a0Bill\u2019s condition, Jane and Bill were able to stay married and live quite happily for a number of years. \u00a0Ultimately, after Bill had regained Jane\u2019s trust, they both agreed to destroy the Separation Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Jane was wise to act fairly quickly, rather than wait for years as do many spouses of people who are suffering from an addiction or mental illness. \u00a0When a spouse unilaterally \u201changs in there\u201d, despite the other spouse\u2019s refusal to acknowledge their problem, saving the marriage becomes less likely. \u00a0At that point, the supporting spouse is often simply too tired and resentful to stay in the relationship. \u00a0Jane and Bill\u2019s story confirms that sometimes one can save a family by taking a drastic step toward its actual dissolution.<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you know anyone who would also find this blog of value?
